Chapter 8: Ryan's POV: The Partner

Ryan's POV

Erin's mother had slapped me hard enough to loosen a tooth, and I stood there and wished she'd do it again.

It was easier than turning around.

Hal Brewer got out of the patrol car with two coffees in a cardboard tray.

He had been my partner for nine years. He had taught me how to read a room, how to sit on a lie until it spoiled, and how to write up a bad night so it read clean.

"Rough morning, partner?" he said, nodding at my cheek.

"My mother-in-law and I have a difference of opinion," I said.

Behind me, the front door banged shut. Erin had taken the baby inside.

"Heard you went dark last night," Hal said. "Gwen called me at six, out of her mind. She said you walked off with a baby."

I kept my face still.

"What baby?"

"The one on her porch." He handed me a coffee. "Somebody left a newborn on her porch. You took it. Off the books."

I held the coffee and did not drink it.

"You're out sick, Hal," I said. "That's what dispatch told me. Last I heard, you were in bed with a fever."

"Feeling better." He grinned. "Gwen was worried, so I got up."

Gwen had called him at six.

She had not called me. My phone was in my pocket with four texts from her, none of them mentioning a baby.
