Chapter 15: Naples

Marlo's POV

I didn't want him in Skye's kitchen.

I let him in anyway, because Dale was already on his feet, and I wanted to see Dale's face.

Orin stopped by the refrigerator with his cap in his hand.

He didn't look at me.

"Mr. Wiedenbeck, I'm told you have something for my signature," I said. "Before I read it, we're going to listen to something."

"Marlo." Dale smiled. "Anything this man hands you is a performance."

"Then it should be short."

Orin set the cracked phone on the table.

It was old, with a split corner and a battery that had been charged for no reason for three years.

He pressed the screen, and a recording began.

First it was wind, and boots on frozen gravel, a man breathing hard.

Then a woman's voice, close to the microphone, cool and level.

"Don't touch him."

I knew that voice.

I had eaten that voice's casseroles for years.

"Mom," said Orin on the tape, ragged. "Mom, he's not moving. Call an ambulance."

"In a minute."

"He's on the ice. Call."

"I said in a minute. Where is his phone?" A pause, a rustle. "He's changed the will, hasn't he. He told you."

"He told me nothing. Mom, please."

"Don't whine. Tell me what Marlo Lowry owns. Outright, or through the company? I need to know before I make a call."

I put my hand over my mouth.

On the table, the phone went on.

I heard her walk away from him, and I heard keys, and a number dialed.

"Dale," said Bernadette. "It's me. Hamish is dead. No. No, don't send anyone. Come to the dock. And bring the pad from the doctor who owes you. The retired one."
