Chapter 11: Thin Walls

Rhys switched off the light and pulled me into the bedroom.

We stood in the dark behind the half-open door, his chest against my back, his hand flat over my mouth.

I could feel him breathing, and I could feel my own heart going.

The front door opened.

"Shoes," Delaney said, laughing. "Don't track snow on my rug."

A man's voice answered her, low and easy.

"Your boyfriend know about this place?"

"Colby thinks it's our little secret."

"Our little secret."

"Our sweet little secret. He's very proud of it."

Ice slid down my spine.

I heard a cork pop, and glasses clink, and the couch take two people's weight.

"Colby's turning into a problem," Delaney said. "He was shaking tonight. He heard something at a bar."

"Then handle it."

"I am. I'll take care of Colby, I always do. Rhys is the one I worry about."

I felt Rhys go very still behind me.

"The hockey husband," the man said.

"He'll sign anything if it keeps me quiet. He hates scenes." She sighed. "So I'll tell them what they need to hear. Tomorrow morning, I post that I'm pregnant."

My eyes stung in the dark.

"Is it mine?" the man asked.

"Does it matter? It'll be Colby's. He'll marry me the day the papers clear. And Rhys won't make a fuss with a baby involved. Not a captain with his image."

The man laughed.

"You're a monster," he said, admiringly.

"I'm a strategist."

Rhys's hand moved from my mouth to my shoulder, and held on.

We waited forty minutes.

When the front door finally shut behind them, we slid out through the bedroom window onto the fire escape.

The cold hit our wet faces.

We climbed down to the alley without a word.

He drove us north with the heater roaring.

Neither of us spoke until he turned into his own driveway and cut the engine.

"I'm sorry," he said, to the windshield.

"Don't."

"She's carrying someone else's child and she's going to hand it to your husband."
