Chapter 14: Not a Favor

On Tuesday afternoon two men in dark jackets stood on either side of the ballroom doors.

They wore earpieces, and neither of them smiled.

"Who are they?" I asked.

"Hotel security," the night manager said. He was handing out clipboards at the next table and wouldn't meet my eyes. "For Thursday."

"I didn't order security."

"No, ma'am. Mr. Frayne did."

I found the invoice in the folder Marcy had left on the registration table.

Two guards, six hours, and a bold line across the total: COMPLIMENTARY.

I went up to the fourth floor and knocked on the frame of his open office door.

Abram looked up from a spreadsheet and put his pen down.

"Joanna."

"You hired two guards and wrote them off."

"Yes."

"We agreed on full rate. No favors. I said it on the phone and you said understood."

"Neil called the front desk last night." He said it evenly. "He told the clerk that he'd be bringing a camera crew on Thursday and that nobody was allowed to stop him. He was drunk, or he sounded it."

"Then I'll pay for the guards."

"They aren't a favor. They're the building's insurance."

"Then bill me for the insurance."

"No."

I came in and shut the door behind me.

"I will not be anyone's charity," I said. "I spent seventeen years on one man's expense account, and I'm done owing people."

"That isn't what this is."

"Then what is it?"

"It's a woman who stood up for herself in my ballroom, and a man who shouldn't be near her door." He stood. "You're allowed to let somebody stand next to you, Joanna."
