Chapter 9: Abram's POV: Suite 612

Abram's POV

I have run the Bellhaven Harbor Hotel for nine years, and the first rule of the job is that a hotel keeps its guests' business to itself.

I kept it for four months.

That is the thing I couldn't stop thinking about on Thursday night, standing in the empty bar after close.

Neil Wexford had booked Suite 612 in March, on a corporate card, as a "client residence."

The card belonged to his wife's company.

I knew that because I had signed the paperwork.

I knew the woman who stayed there was pregnant, because housekeeping asked me in May whether we should stock the minibar with ginger ale.

I said yes.

I said nothing else, which was the rule.

Then Joanna Wexford walked onto my ballroom stage on Monday and said the truth to two hundred people, and I stood in the back with my hands in my pockets and understood what my rule had cost somebody.

I walked up to the sixth floor at eleven.

The suite door was open, and the room smelled of lavender and hotel soap.

A housekeeper was stripping the bed.

"Mr. Frayne. The lady called down. She said she's staying through the weekend."

"Who's paying?"

She hesitated. "She said Mr. Wexford would handle it."

"Mr. Wexford's card was declined on Monday."

"I know. I told her. She said she'd call him."

"Did she?"

"She cried a little," the housekeeper said. "Then she said never mind and sat on the bed."
