Chapter 10: What He Did
I said it when we were dressed, in the dark, with the cold room still ringing.
I had not planned to.
He was buttoning his shirt with his back to me, and he said very quietly, "Thank you."
I went cold all over.
"Don't," I said.
"Don't thank me."
He turned.
"Kali," he said.
"You don't get to thank me for this," I said.
"You don't get to stand there with that face and be grateful."
His hands stopped on the buttons.
I took the little brass key from the string around my neck.
I held it out on my palm so the cage-light caught it.
"Do you know what this is?" I asked.
"The drawer," he said.
"The back key.
"You had it on a string."
"I've had it on a string for nine years," I said.
"It's the key to the cash drawer I held shut.
"The cash drawer, Nikos.
"The one I leaned against with my back while you took my brother's hands."
"I know what it is," he said.
"I wear it every day," I said.
"Do you know why?"
"No," he said.
"So that I don't forget I let you."
