Chapter 11: Aris's Hands
"Every Sunday," Aris said.
He set the dough scraper down on the steel and sat on the prep stool with his bent hands between his knees.
"Nine years.
"He parks at the corner by the dentist at noon.
"He leaves at four."
"You never told me," I said.
"I thought you knew," he said.
"I thought that was why you looked at the street."
I sat down across from him.
The kitchen was warm with yeast and cardamom, and the radio on the shelf was playing something low and Greek.
"What does he do?" I asked.
"Nothing," Aris said.
"He sits in the car.
"He doesn't come in.
"He doesn't look at the door."
"And you weren't afraid?"
"The first year I carried a pan to the back step every Sunday for a month.
"Nothing happened.
"After that I stopped being afraid."
"Why?" I said.
"Because a man who wanted to hurt me again would have walked in."
Aris looked at his hands.
"And there is the cooler," he said.
