Chapter 4: The Brother

Anders Ekdahl knocked on Pia's door at ten past seven on Tuesday morning.

I knew it was him before I opened it.

He had his brother's height and none of his brother's polish.

His canvas jacket was creased from a long drive, and he was holding a steel thermos in one hand.

"I left Thunder Bay at three," he said. "I figured if I called again you'd block me."

"I might have," I said.

"That's fair."

Pia came up behind me in her socks, holding a spatula.

"Is that the brother?" she asked.

"Anders," he said, and held out his free hand.

She looked at it, then at the thermos.

"What's in that?"

"Coffee. Black. I didn't know what anyone drank."

"Come in," said Pia. "She can't have it. I'll take yours."

He took a chair at her little kitchen table and set the thermos down in front of him.

I sat across from him with my quilt over my knees.

I had been awake since four.

"You told me not to sign anything else," I said. "What else is there?"

He turned his cup a quarter turn.

"My father left Nils and me the boatyard in equal shares," he said. "Nils has been after mine since July. He sent a lawyer to Thunder Bay with a paper that makes it sound like a favor."

"You didn't sign."

"I haven't spoken to my brother since the funeral."

"I noticed," I said. "You weren't at Sunday brunch."

"I wasn't at the funeral dinner either." He rubbed the back of his thumb, where there was a thin white scar. "Birgit called me on Sunday night. She was excited. She said the family was growing and I should come and see my niece or nephew."
