Chapter 10: The Fee
Phillip's POV
The doctor put a cold stethoscope on my chest and told me to breathe normally.
I breathed normally.
He listened for a long time.
Beatrice had gone ahead into the hall, and the door was shut, and I was shirtless in front of a man who had slept with my wife on Wednesdays.
"Your heart is fine," Christian said.
"It was beating very fast at the party."
"I'm told you danced."
"I danced."
"Then it was doing its job." He took the stethoscope off and hung it around his neck. "Your pressure's a little high. You haven't slept."
"I've been in my study."
"Why?"
"There's no bed in the study."
"That's my point, Phil."
He sat on the stool and looked at me for longer than a doctor needs to.
"I'm not going to ask what you wanted from this appointment," he said. "But I'll tell you what I'd prescribe. Go home. Knock on a door. Say a complete sentence."
"I don't know what you mean."
"You know exactly what I mean," Christian said. "You've known for three years."
I got dressed, and I paid the receptionist in cash for a visit that had lasted fourteen minutes, and I went home.
Linnea was in my study when I got there.
She was sitting in my chair with her bad ankle on my desk, and the ankle was fine.
"Close the door, Phillip."
I closed the door.
She had dropped the cardigan and the soft voice, and she looked like what she was, a thirty-year-old woman with a very good agent and a very bad plan.
