Chapter 18: Preliminary
Sterne wrote his statement at a desk by the fourth-floor window, in a fountain pen, on letterhead.
I watched him from the doorway with a cup of tea.
He wrote slowly and without crossing anything out.
"Case history," he read aloud, without looking up.
"Thirty-year-old female, presenting with a reported fall from a flight of stairs. Examined the following morning."
"No swelling, no bruising, no tenderness on palpation."
"You sound like you're defending a thesis."
"I'm a man defending a woman's innocence in front of a mother-in-law. It's harder." He capped the pen. "Come in, Bea. You're standing in a draft."
I came in.
His room was the neatest on the floor, with a made bed and a row of leather-bound books arranged by height.
I sat on the edge of the desk, and he looked at my knees over his glasses.
"I can't say she isn't pregnant," he said. "A photograph of a test proves nothing. It could be anyone's bathroom counter."
"But you can say the ankle is fine."
"I can say what I examined. I won't say a word beyond it."
"That's what I like about you."
"Is it?" Sterne asked.
He said it so mildly that I almost missed it.
I put the tea down.
"I'd like to ask a question that isn't clinical," he said, "and I'd like you to not answer it with a schedule."
"Go ahead."
"You've been my Wednesday and my Saturday for two years. I've had the best forty-eight hours of any week, and then I've had the other hundred and twenty."
