Chapter 7: The Blue Notebook

Claire managed the front desk at a dental office on Lake Street, and she was very good at it.

Everybody loved her.

Patients brought her tulips and kids' drawings, and the hygienists saved her half their lunches.

I walked in at ten on Wednesday morning with my purse over my shoulder and my pulse in my ears.

The waiting room was almost full.

Claire was behind the desk with her headset on, laughing at something an old man was saying.

Then she saw me, and her whole face rearranged itself into concern.

"Laur! Is everything okay? Is it Bea?"

"It's not Bea."

"Let me put you in the back."

"No. Here."

She took her headset off slowly.

Two assistants stopped at the file cabinet, and a woman holding a toddler looked up from her magazine.

"Did you call Children's Services on me?"

Claire's eyes went wide and then shining.

"Oh, Laura."

"Yes or no?"

"I was scared." She pressed her fingers to her mouth. "You took the kids and drove away in a state. Daniel was sick with worry. I made one phone call, because I couldn't sleep."

"You told a stranger I forget things."

"You do forget things, sweetheart."

The woman with the toddler shifted her chair.

One of the assistants put a hand on Claire's arm.

"I never said it to hurt you," Claire went on, soft and shaking. "I said it because I love you, and because someone has to say it out loud."

"Say what?"

"That you're not well."
