Chapter 15: What He Signed
The buzzer went off at six in the morning.
I was lying on Megan's couch with my shoes still on, and I hadn't slept.
Heath's wife was asleep on the air mattress by the window with her coat over her.
Megan came out of her bedroom in scrub pants and put her hand on the intercom.
"Who is it?"
"It's Cory. Please. I'm not going to knock. I just want to give her something."
Megan looked at me.
"I'll go," I said.
"I'm coming."
"Stay with her. I'll leave the door open."
I walked out into the hallway in my socks.
Cory stood by the stairwell door in last night's shirt.
He hadn't shaved, and his eyes were swollen.
He was holding a yellow legal pad and a single brass key.
"I'm not here to ask you for anything," he said.
"Then say what you came to say."
"I wrote it down. I didn't trust myself to say it right."
He held out the pad.
I took it, and I read it standing under the corridor light.
It was four pages in his handwriting, the real one, not mine.
He wrote that he had signed my name on a separation agreement he knew I had never read.
He wrote that he had copied the signature from the bakery contract I'd sent him in March.
He wrote that Heath had handed him the file and told him it was only to be safe, and that Cory had known better and done it anyway.
He had signed the bottom with the date.
"That's the only copy I'm giving you," he said. "I sent another one to the compliance office at my brokerage at five this morning. With Heath's name on it, and mine."
