Chapter 18: Dishes
By the first Sunday in December, Cory had been washing Megan's dishes for four weeks.
It was Megan's idea.
"If he wants to be useful, he can be useful at my sink," she had said. "Not in my living room."
He arrived at six, rolled up his sleeves and said hello to nobody in particular.
Megan was on a night shift.
I sat at her kitchen table with my laptop and a bowl of crackers, and I pretended to work.
The bakery had signed me for its whole rebrand that week, and I had sent the invoice from Megan's couch.
I was proud of it, and nobody at the table asked.
Cory scrubbed a pot with his back to me.
"The transfer went through on the first," he said. "It'll go on the first of every month. I set it up with the bank, so it isn't me deciding each time."
"I saw it."
"They moved me off accounts. I'm in the back office until spring."
"I didn't ask."
"I know. I'm telling you so you don't have to wonder." He rinsed a plate and set it in the rack. "Heath came to my apartment on Wednesday. He stood in the door and said it. What he did. It took about four minutes."
"What did you say?"
"Nothing. I closed the door."
He dried his hands on the dish towel and turned around.
He had lost weight, and there were gray hairs over his ears I had never seen.
"I'm not asking to come to your appointments," he said. "I'm not asking for anything. If there's ever a day you want me to hear the heartbeat, I'd like to. Only if you decide it."
