The Duquesne Club ballroom held three hundred people at round tables under chandeliers, and table nine sat dead center.
I wore the green dress.
Fran sat on my left in her reading glasses, and Roan on my right with his hand resting openly on the back of my chair.
At the head table, under a banner reading ALLEGHENY EDUCATORS FOUNDATION, Maureen Coughlin sat in a silver silk gown with her pearls gleaming.
She had not looked at my table once.
The foundation's chair, a stout woman with a lectern voice, finished reading a list of Maureen's thirty-one years as a principal.
"And it is my honor," she said, "to present Educator of the Year to Maureen Coughlin."
The applause was warm.
Maureen rose, smoothing her gown, and the foundation chair turned.
"Her son has asked to give the toast."
Colin came up from the side of the room in a plain gray suit he must have bought off a rack.
He kissed his mother's cheek, and she patted his arm and beamed up at him.
