Roan did not take me home from the Duquesne Club.
He took me to the forty-first floor, because I said the words "my father's room," and he never asked why.
The lift hummed.
I stood against the brass with my arms crossed over the green silk and watched the numbers.
"You can say it," Roan said.
"Say what?"
"That you wanted him to fight, and he fought, and now you don't know what you want."
"That isn't fair."
"It's true."
"I don't want him back," I said. "I want the last two years to have gone differently, and that isn't the same thing."
"No," Roan said. "It isn't."
The doors opened on the dark office, and I led him through it.
In my father's apartment, I turned on one lamp and kicked off my heels.
My hands were shaking a little.
"I don't want this to be a way not to feel it," I said.
"Then feel it." He came close, not touching. "Feel all of it, and I'll be right here, and when you want me, you'll say so."
