Chapter 20: The Vow Reading

I walked out into the light with my head high and my heart in my throat.

The applause came down on me from three thousand seats and a painted ceiling.

Somewhere above, a crane camera swung over my head.

Brendan stood at center stage in a white shirt and no jacket.

He held out both hands.

He had never looked more beautiful.

"There she is," he said, to the house, his voice cracking right on time. "The woman who taught me to love."

I took his hands.

They were cold.

I felt a tremor in them, and I knew he could feel the roses on my breath.

For the first twenty minutes he told the story.

Columbus, the letter, the hospital bed.

He told it well.

He told it the way he'd told it for four years, with the pauses in the right places and tears in his eyes on the same word.

I stood beside him and smiled.

I had written every line of it, and I knew when to look at the floor.

"And now," Brendan said, turning to me, "I have something to ask."

The lights lowered.

A violin began, thin and sweet.

He sank to one knee.

Three thousand people made the sound three thousand people make when they are about to cry.
