The letter asked Jack to come back and read.
St. Anselm's had started a program for patients who had no visitors, the volunteer coordinator wrote.
She had seen the Chicago broadcast, and she remembered a night orderly on the fourth floor who used to sit in 412.
"We have a bed on four that nobody visits," she wrote. "We would be honored."
Jack read the page twice, and then a third time, standing in my sister's hall.
"You don't have to," I said.
"I know."
"You could say no."
"I know." He folded it into his pocket. "I want to go once. And I want you there."
So on a Tuesday night in November, we drove to St.
Anselm's, and parked in the staff lot, and walked through the sliding doors under a sign I had last seen from a gurney.
The lobby smelled of floor wax and old flowers.
My knees went weak.
Jack took my hand without a word.
We rode the elevator to four.
The family lounge was at the end of the hall, a small room with a vinyl couch, a coffee machine and a shelf of donated paperbacks.
