Chapter 14: The Gorge
Tae-san came back at dusk with two saddlebags and no veil.
Ji-han was sitting on the roof of the Cedar Court, where nobody could ask him anything.
"I'm going to Dragon Gate tonight," Tae-san called from the yard below. "I told the council it's the Leader's autumn vigil for the fallen."
"Is it?"
"It is now."
He held up the reins of a second horse toward the roof.
"I wasn't going to ask you," he said. "I'd like you to come."
Ji-han looked at him for a long time.
Then he went down the post in four moves, because he was vain and Tae-san was watching.
They reached the gorge before the second dawn.
Dragon Gate Pass was narrower than Ji-han remembered.
Two cliffs of black rock leaned toward each other with a mist-filled slot between them.
Across it hung the rope bridge, new hemp, pale as bone.
Someone had rebuilt it.
Ji-han's knees went strange at the sight of it.
He had stood on the north rim fourteen months ago and watched two men go off that bridge with their hands in each other's collars.
He had watched a third man climb out.
Tae-san walked onto the planks without looking down.
