Chapter 22: The Vote
The gauze came away from Tae-san's face in one smooth pull, and the hat dropped to the floor with a small flat sound.
Four hundred people looked at a man with a dimple in his chin.
Nobody gasped.
That was the strangest thing.
They only looked.
They looked at him in stunned silence.
Tae-san stood there in plain indigo, tan and broad and unburned, with the noon light on his face.
His hands were shaking.
He closed them into fists, and opened them again.
"My name is Gwon Tae-san," he said.
His voice was the one he used for tea, soft and a little rough, and it reached the back of the Hall.
"The man you elected is dead, and I am the one who wore his veil."
A sound went through the nine seats.
"I lied to you every morning for fourteen months."
He looked at the Mount Jade seat, and he did not look away.
"I thought, if the Alliance learns the Leader is dead, the north will march before the dead are buried."
"I thought I could carry it until there was peace." He drew a breath.
"I was wrong to carry it alone."
"I'm sorry."
"Do with me what you like."
He knelt.
He went down on both knees on the floor of the Council Hall, and put his hands flat on the boards, and bowed his head.
Ji-han had a dozen sharp things in his mouth and could not say one.
The Hall was dead silent.
Then the old head of Mount Jade came down from the dais, slowly, on his two small feet.
He stopped in front of Tae-san.
He put out one dry brown hand and tipped the big man's chin up with a finger, and looked into his face.
"You made noodles for my nephew," he said, "every winter."
"Yes, Master."
"You burned them."
"Every time."
"He ate them anyway." The old man's mouth shook. "He wrote to me that it was the one thing he looked forward to."
