Chapter 23: Real Vows
They read the letter on the floor of the Cedar Court, with their backs against the bed and one candle between them.
Tae-san could not open it.
He held the envelope with both hands for so long that Ji-han took it from him.
Ji-han slit the wax with his thumbnail and gave it back.
Tae-san unfolded one page.
He read it aloud, and his voice kept catching on the same places.
Tae-san,
If you are reading this, you have taken off the hat. I hope you looked as foolish in it as I always did.
I will not write thank you. You would drop the tea.
I should have said more while I lived.
I thought you knew.
A man who thinks that has not been paying attention to his own household.
You were the best of my house. The war is the thing I failed at. You are the thing I did right.
If you have met the Second Seat by now, he is going to be difficult. Feed him.

Tae-san put the page down on his knee.
He sat very still.
Then he said, in a thick astonished voice, "He knew about the noodles."
"Everyone knew about the noodles."
"I thought it was a secret."
"Tae-san. You burned them every winter for twenty years."
He started to laugh, and the laugh turned into the other thing, and Ji-han put an arm around his shoulders and let him do both.
"Feed him," Tae-san said, hiccupping. "He told me to feed you. He wrote it down."
"I'm very difficult."
"You're a terror."
"I'm a Lord."
"You're a terror with a title," said Tae-san, and kissed his temple.
The wedding was four days later, because Soo-bin refused anything sooner.
