Chapter 24: Well Done
The roof of the Cedar Court had a flat landing behind the east gable, where the tiles ran out and the old cedar leaned over.
Tae-san had been there before him.
A quilt lay spread on the planks.
A lacquer tray stood beside it with a pot of tea, two bowls, and a saucer of dried jujubes.
The autumn moon was past full and a little lopsided, and the whole of Iron Peak lay below them in lamplight.
"You planned this," Ji-han said.
"Soo-bin planned it. I carried the tray."
"Of course."
Ji-han sat on the quilt with his robe wrapped around him and his feet bare.
The wind was cold and clean.
Far down in the court, a man was singing a cult marching song, badly, and a woman was telling him to shut up.
Tae-san lowered himself beside him.
He poured the tea, a clumsy pour, and handed Ji-han a bowl with both hands.
Then he caught himself and laughed.
"Habit."
"Keep it. I like it."
"You do not."
"I like it in private."
Ji-han drank.
It was too sweet, with a jujube melting at the bottom, and he finished the whole bowl.
"I have a present," Tae-san said.
"The roof is a present."
"The roof is a roof." Tae-san reached up to his own head.
His hair hung loose to his shoulders, as it did at night.
He took the plain wooden pin from where it sat in his half-knot, and held it out on his palm.
Ji-han had seen it a hundred times.
It was dark and smooth and worn pale at one end, with no carving and no ornament.
"It's the only thing I've ever owned that wasn't his," Tae-san said.
"Hyeok-ryeong gave me my sword and my robes and my name. I bought this at a market when I was fifteen, with money I'd saved."
