Chapter 14: Who Wrote It

I brought him to the depot because I did not want to read the rest of it alone.

Drew was at the kitchen table with a mug of coffee going cold when we came up the stairs.

He stood when he saw who was behind me.

"Stewart," he said.

"Mr. Tilden."

"Drew is fine."

"Thank you for letting me in your home."

"I didn't," Drew said mildly. "She did."

He looked at my face, and whatever he saw there made him pick up his mug and his keys.

"I'll be downstairs with the truck," he said. "Shout if you need a box carried."

He touched my shoulder once on the way past.

The door closed, and Stewart stood in the middle of a kitchen that was not his, with nothing in his hands.

"Sit," I said.

He sat.

I put the phone on the table between us and turned it so we could both see the screen.

"I want you to read it," I said. "All of it, from the top. I'm not going to tell you what it says."

He read for a long time.

He read the allowance first, and his jaw worked.

He read the dinners, and then the visits to my parents.

He scrolled back past six years of Tuesdays.

His finger stopped on a line near the bottom of the screen.

"This was the week I made partner," he said.

"What does it say?"

"Welcome to the ledger. I set this up to make your life easier. Don't worry about the details, I'll handle Hannah's side."
