Chapter 15: Half Out the Door

Drew came back up at ten, after Stewart's car had gone.

I told him everything standing at the sink, with my back to him.

The calendar, the dinners, the note under my father's birthday.

The edit made at 4:52 on a Thursday afternoon.

He listened without a word, and when I finished he was quiet for so long that I turned around.

He stood by the door with his arms folded.

"So now you go to the Plaza," he said.

"On Saturday. With Stewart."

"Because he's going to stand beside you and be sorry."

"Because I want Delaney to say it in front of the people who laughed."

"I know why." He rubbed his thumb along the old scar on his hand. "I'm asking what happens to you when he's good at it."

"Good at what?"

"Being sorry. He sat at that table today and you let him read it. He's going to wear a tux and hold your arm."

"And you think I'll go back to him."

"I think he had you six years," Drew said. "And I've had you four weeks."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the one I've got."

I crossed the kitchen until we were an arm's length apart.

"Say the rest," I said. "I can see there's a rest."

His jaw tightened.

"A woman who wakes up at minute twenty is still half out the door," he said. "I watch you do it. You come back, but I watch you go first. I don't know how to be slow enough."
