Chapter 20: Her Seventeen Minutes

Two men in dark suits walked Delaney out through the side door, and she went without looking back.

The ballroom began to talk again, low and shaken.

Stewart stood at the foot of the dais, and I stepped down to him.

"Hannah," he said.

"Not here."

There was a small anteroom off the ballroom with a velvet bench and a tall window onto the park.

I closed the door behind us and the noise fell away.

Stewart took out his phone and held it out to me.

"What's that for?"

"The timer," he said. "You were given seventeen minutes. I'd like you to have all of them."

I looked at him for a long moment.

Then I took the phone, set the timer, and propped it on the arm of the bench so we could both see it.

17:00.

The numbers began to fall.

"I'm going to talk," I said. "You're not going to interrupt."

"I won't."

"The first dinner you left, it was our second anniversary. You'd said you were coming from court. I sat with the wine for forty minutes, and the waiter asked me three times if I wanted to order."

"I..."

"No."

He closed his mouth.

"My cousin's wedding. I asked you to dance with me. You looked at your phone and you said, one song. I stood on the floor and watched you check the time."

"Christmas, the first year. I made the pie. You took one bite and your phone buzzed, and you stood up with the fork in your hand."
