Chapter 10: Terms

I read the last line three times, and then I threw the letter across the room.

It hit the wall under my mother's portrait and slid down to the carpet.

"He knew," I said. "He knew who Bryce was before I said yes. He sat at my wedding and walked me down the aisle."

"Hannah."

"He let a man marry me to rob me, because he felt guilty. That was his gift to me. That was his way of being sorry."

"I know."

"You don't know!"

I was on my feet and I didn't remember standing.

I pushed Eli in the chest with both hands, and he let me.

I pushed him again.

"Get out of my house."

"All right."

"Get out. I mean it. You stood in that kitchen, you nodded at that funeral, you've known his name for a week and you let me find out in a widow's kitchen."

"All right," he said again, and stood there.

He did not turn toward the door.

"Why aren't you leaving?"

"Because you said it twice, and you didn't push me out," Eli said. "You pushed me back."

I stared at him.

He was breathing hard.

His shirt was crumpled where my hands had been, and he made no move to straighten it.
