Chapter 21: Arrest

The detective walked down the length of the boardroom in his grey raincoat, and no one in the room spoke.

Two uniformed officers followed him and stopped at the door.

"Detective," I said. "Thank you for waiting outside."

"Ms. Prescott." He nodded to me, then looked at Bryce. "Mr. Danner?"

"There's been a misunderstanding," Bryce said.

The pleasant voice was back, but it came out too fast.

"I'm in the middle of a board meeting. If you'd like to make an appointment..."

"Bryce Danner, I have a warrant for your arrest."

He pulled a folded paper from his pocket.

"Wire fraud. Forgery. Misappropriation of funds in the amount of eleven point four million dollars. And bribery of corporate officers."

"Bribery?"

"Seven counts," the detective said.

Seven directors lowered their eyes to the pages in front of them.

"You can't do this here," Bryce said.

"I'm doing it where I found you."

He turned on me.

For six years I had watched that face smile at me across a table, and it did not smile now.

"You called them," he said. "You planned this."

"I told them this morning where to find you," I said.

"Ms. Prescott's bank officer has been in touch with us since the dinner," the detective added dryly. "We've had this file for nine days."

Bryce looked at the chairman.

The chairman had pushed his chair back from the table.

He was sixty-eight years old, and he looked it.

"Hannah," he said hoarsely. "I never meant..."

"You took two hundred and eighty-five thousand dollars."
