Chapter 9: The Letter

I did not speak to Eli until we were back in the car.

He drove with both hands on the wheel and said nothing.

"Pull over," I said.

He pulled over on a dark street of closed garages, and cut the engine.

"Tell me all of it."

"I was twenty-six," he said. "I'd been at your father's firm for eight months. He called me in on a Friday and said there was a note coming due, and he wanted it handled in person."

"Why in person?"

"Because Raymond Danner had asked for ten more days." Eli stared at the windshield. "He'd found a bank that would refinance him, and he only needed the ten days to sign it. Your father said no."

"Why would he say no?"

"Because the eleven hotels were worth more than the loan, and he knew it."

The streetlight buzzed.

"I drove to that house," Eli said. "I sat in that kitchen. I put the notice on the table. Raymond asked me if there was anything to be done, and your father had told me to say no."

"And you said no."

"I said no."

"And he killed himself."

"Eleven days later."

He had not looked at me once.

"You were twenty-six," I said slowly. "You followed an order."

"That doesn't change what I did."

"What did you do for twelve years after?"

"I kept working for him. I told myself it was a job." He rubbed his face. "When he got sick, I asked him if I could fix it. He said no, and he said it wasn't mine to fix. When he died, I took the trustee seat, because if anyone was going to keep your father's money from hurting somebody else, I wanted it to be me."
