I came through the front door of Chestnut Street at 8:02 on Sunday night in my black concert dress.

The housekeeper let me in without a word and took my coat.

She had come back from her week off, and she looked at me with an expression I could not read.

Through the double doors I could see the long dining table, with twelve places laid in white and silver.

The trustees' wives glittered in the candlelight.

I walked in.

The talk stopped.

Sybil sat at the head in her chair, in a gray silk gown and the good pearls.

To her right sat Max, in a black suit, with his jaw set.

Juliette sat at his left, in the chair that had been mine for six years.

She wore a blue dress with a neckline made for the occasion.

"Good evening," I said.

"Aubrey, dear," Sybil said, with a bright, brittle smile. "What a surprise. We're full, I'm afraid."

"That's all right. I know where I sit."

I walked the length of the table, past the trustees, to the empty place at the foot.
