Chapter 10: Behind the Glass

At ten o'clock the Wolves were on the practice ice in black jerseys, and Lena stood at the boards in her sister's old parka.

Beck skated past without looking at her.

That was in the terms.

Amber Dunning stood a few feet away, holding a tablet and wearing a cream coat.

"Donald has an offer," she said. "He's too busy to deliver it. So I will."

"I don't want it."

"A job. Family liaison for the Wolves. Two hundred thousand dollars a year, and your own office."

"For what?"

"For being loyal to the family," Amber said, with a pleasant smile. "And for staying off the internet."

Lena laughed once.

"I'd rather work in the Zamboni."

"We'll see if you still feel that way when Stanton's lawyer answers your lawyer."

Out on the ice, Stanton had stopped mid-drill.

He skated to the boards and leaned on them, breathing hard, six feet from her.

"Come to the house tonight," he said. "We'll talk. Just us. You don't have to make this ugly."

"It's already ugly."

"I did it for us, babe."

"I'm Sadler now."

"You were crying in Rylander's guest room last night," Stanton said, loud enough that two players turned around. "Everyone knows where you slept."

"Who told you that?"

"Everyone knows."

Lena's face burned.

"At least he didn't lie to me for a year."

"Oh, he lied," Stanton said, smiling. "He told you he hated me. He's been in love with you since the charity skate."

Lena went still.

The ice had gone silent.

Beck had stopped at center ice with his stick across his knees, and he was staring at Stanton with a face she had not seen on him before.
