Chapter 23: The Long Table
On Sunday the dining room held five people, and every one of them was talking.
My mother sat at the head of the table in her wheelchair.
Patrick had driven to Pooler that morning to bring her himself, with a blanket over her knees and a cushion for her back.
She wore the blue cardigan.
Her good hand lay flat on the cloth, and she kept looking up at the chandelier.
My tía sat beside her in her church dress, with her purse on her lap.
Ivy sat at the foot.
She had carried the mahogany chair in through the front door that afternoon.
She set it down at the foot of the table and sat in it.
"It's pulled out," she announced. "Because I'm in it."
She poured herself wine.
"Mamá," I said. "This is Ivy."
My mother looked at the short bleached hair, the scar, and the flour under the nails.
"Ivy," she said.
It was one of her five.
Ivy's face crumpled and she laughed.
"That's the nicest thing anyone has said to me in three years," she said.
We ate.
My tía had cooked for two days.
There were tamales, rice, a pot of beans, and a dish of roasted peppers, and Ivy's cinnamon rolls on a plate in the middle.
Patrick rolled his own tamale at the kitchen table first, under inspection, and my tía watched him over her glasses.
