Chapter 19: Public
For a moment the only sound was the fire.
Then a woman in the third row laughed, uncertainly, and stopped.
Waylon moved first.
He stepped toward me with his hand out for the microphone and his face set in soft, sorrowful patience.
"Folks," he said, to the crowd and not to me. "I'm so sorry. This is my late wife's cousin. She's been very unwell since the funeral, and I should have told you she was struggling."
I held the microphone out of his reach.
"Waylon," I said. "Touch your collar."
He didn't. But I saw his fingers twitch.
"I have my license," I said to the ring. "I have six years of photos, and a marriage certificate in my truck. You can all look. But I'd rather you listened."
I turned my head toward the sound board at the side of the stage.
Cal's cousin was standing behind it with her hand on a switch.
I nodded.
The speakers crackled, and my own voice came out of them, low and tinny, recorded through a canvas wall.
It was the night in Tent 4.
There was the clink of a glass, a woman's laugh, and Waylon's voice.
"Make her trip worth it," he said, and the whole ring heard him say it.
Somebody gasped.
Waylon's face drained.
"That's edited," he said. "That could be anyone."
"Play the next one," I said.
The speakers clicked.
There was a table, a fork on china, and a long pleasant silence. Then Diane's voice came out over two hundred people, smooth and pleased.
