Chapter 20: The Wall of Couples
Nobody went to bed.
An hour after the fire burned down, most of the camp was packed into the lodge's main room.
They sat in sweatshirts and blankets, talking in low voices.
Cal stood in front of the Wall of Couples with a stepladder and a claw hammer.
He started with the big center frame.
He lifted it off its nail, and the card under it, the one with my name on it, fluttered to the floor.
Nobody picked it up.
"That was my mother's wall," he said, to the room. "She hung every one of these herself."
"Cal," said a man by the stairs. "You don't have to."
"I do. I put a label on the corner of that frame two years ago. Our Golden Couple." He set it face down on a table. "I sold you a lie, and I'm sorry. I'm taking it down."
A woman in a blue robe stood up.
She walked to the wall, took her own note off the glass, tore it in half, and sat back down.
Then another guest did, and another.
I stood by the stairs with the sapphire in my fist and watched two hundred people take apart what they had loved, one slip of paper at a time.
It was the first time all week I wanted to cry.
"Samantha."
Waylon had come in through the front door.
His vest was gone and his hair was wet.
He looked ten years older than he had at noon.
