Chapter 6: The Ring

Shanna Merrill came to the front desk at nine on Saturday morning to ask for a Band-Aid.

I had spent the night in the staff cabin rehearsing what I would say if I ever had to look at her face to face.

None of it was any use, because she smiled at me first.

"Hi! You're new. I'm Shanna. I've cut my thumb on a tent peg for the third time this year, and I'm starting to think they're after me."

"Jo," I said, and I pulled the first aid kit out from under the counter.

My hands did not shake. I was proud of that.

She sat on the stool and held her thumb out.

"You look tired," she said. "Did Cal put you on the early shift?"

"I'm fine."

"You're not. Eat this." She dug a granola bar out of her jacket and put it on the counter. "I work twelve-hour shifts at a hospice. I know what tired looks like. It looks like you."

I unwrapped the bandage and pressed it over the cut.

"A hospice," I said.

"Mm-hm. It's the best job I've ever had, and I cry about once a week." She laughed. "One of my patients made me promise to marry a man with good teeth. Said anything else was a waste of my time."

"Does he have good teeth?"

"He has excellent teeth," she said, and her whole face lit up. "That's what's so funny. I told him that, and he was already gone, and I swear he smiled."
