Chapter 8: The Locket

Samantha's POV

I read the card twice and handed it back to him.

"Waylon killed me," I said. "In a car crash. Three years ago."

"I'm sorry," Cal said.

"Don't be sorry yet. Who wrote the note on the frame?"

He looked at the paper in his hand.

"I did," he said. "Our Golden Couple. I wrote it myself and hung it, and my staff put the card under it. I thought it was the nicest thing that ever happened to this place."

"You told me you rent tents."

"I rent tents," he said. "I also sold the story. You were right in the shed."

I had been so sure I would feel satisfied to hear it.

I felt tired, and a little sick.

"Did you know?" I said.

"No."

"Then I'll say it once. You hung it, and two hundred people cried on it, and you didn't check. That's on you."

"I know."

"Good," I said. "Now help me with the rest."

He nodded and put the card in his breast pocket, where it made a flat white square under the flannel.

That evening Shanna found me by the fire pit as I was banking the coals.

"Jo!" she said. "Cocoa. Mine's better than Cal's. Sit."

I sat.

She poured it from a dented thermos into a tin cup, and we shared the log in the light of the last embers.

Her breath made small clouds, and she had one sleeve pulled over her bandaged thumb.
