Chapter 15: The Old Man
Old Mr. Yan lived in a lane house in Hongkou, in two rooms off a courtyard with a lemon tree in a pot.
He sat at a square table by the window in a cardigan, with a radio at his elbow murmuring the shipping forecast.
He was seventy-nine, small, bald and brown, and his hands were still the hands of a man who had once pulled ropes for a living.
He did not get up when they came in.
He looked at his grandson, and then at Lu Wen, and then back.
"Shiliang," he said in Shanghainese. "You look better in the photographs than you do in person."
Lu Wen stopped in the doorway.
"Yeye," said Yan, in the same dialect, and cleared his throat. "This is Lu Wen."
"I know who he is," said the old man. "He's in the envelope Gao sent me."
He waved a hand.
"Come in, boy, come in. Sit by me. Not there, there's a draught."
Lu Wen sat.
Yan's hand rested at the small of his back for a moment before it let go.
The old man's eyes followed it and said nothing.
A tin of sesame candy was pushed across the table at him.
