Chapter 16: The Vote

The shareholders' hall on the thirty-eighth floor held sixty people, and every seat was taken.

Yan sat in the front row at the left, with Qiao Min on his right and a lawyer on his other side.

Lu Wen sat at the back, beside the door.

Yan had not looked at him since he came in.

If he looked, he would lose the thread of what he had come to do.

Gao stood at the lectern at three o'clock precisely.

"Friends, this is a painful meeting," he said. "I take no pleasure in it."

He pressed a key, and the screen behind him lit with the first photograph.

It showed a car park, a pillar, and two men.

The room made a sound.

Yan did not move.

Gao showed the second, the third and the fourth, slowly, so that everyone could see Lu Wen's hand in his shirt.

"The Chairman has a relationship with the interpreter who sat at every session of the Haldeck talks," Gao said.

"That interpreter admitted before the Association that he altered the Chairman's words. The Chairman admitted he let him."

He let the room wait.

"The terms we signed last week are softer than any this Group has ever accepted."

He lowered his voice.

"I move that Yan Shiliang be removed as chairman and chief executive, for a conflict of interest that has compromised his judgment," Gao said.
