Chapter 19: The Family
The long table at the lake house held nineteen Sandviks and one empty chair.
Torsten sat at the head with his hands folded.
"I asked you all here tonight because I am an old man who loves his family," he said.
"This week has been hard. A court was made a fool of by lawyers, and a stranger was handed our name."
He did not look at Cavan, who stood at the sideboard with a bottle in his hand.
Ingrid sat halfway down the table in a dark suit with her back straight.
"Wednesday we vote," Torsten went on. "I would like us to vote as a family."
"I have the trustee block. If the rest of you stand with me, nobody will lose anything."
"Not one share. Not one job."
Heads nodded around the table.
An uncle, the one who always looked at his phone, looked at his phone.
Cavan crossed the room.
He poured for the aunts first, as before, and for the uncles, steady and silent.
When he reached Torsten's glass, he filled it to the line where the crystal narrowed, and stopped.
