Chapter 21: The Port
In a lobby side room, the woman with the grey braid put a thin folder on the table and slid it to Cavan.
"Two years of packages," she said. "Invoices, shipping logs, a ledger on a drive. Every one arrived through a man we call the Warden."
"I don't know who that is," Cavan said.
"Of course not," she said, dry as paper. "We have a warrant for container 1140. A judge signed it at ten past noon."
"Then why are we sitting here?"
"Because Torsten Sandvik's lawyer filed an emergency motion to stay it."
"We'll lose three hours to a hearing."
"And the port police have been called off his dock since the fire."
Cavan looked at Ingrid.
Ingrid looked at the window, where the afternoon was already going grey.
"He's going to put 1140 in Lake Superior tonight," she said. "Crane, tug, a few thousand feet out."
"By the time you have your stay lifted, it's twelve fathoms down."
"We cannot enter that yard without the warrant," the agent said.
