Chapter 11: The Offer

Vittoria asked to meet me on Friday, at a restaurant in the Loop with floor-to-ceiling windows.

She had picked a table in the middle of the room, in full daylight.

I put my phone beside the bread basket with the screen facing down and the recorder running.

She arrived ten minutes late in a cream coat, carrying a small paper bag.

"Thank you for coming," she said. "I wasn't sure you would."

She sat, and she took her gloves off one finger at a time.

"I brought you something."

She slid the bag across the table.

Inside was a sheet of paper folded in half.

It was a drawing in thick purple crayon: a woman with a round smile, standing beside a blue house with a very large sun.

"Dario made it for his grandmother," Vittoria said. "He wanted to send it to the center. I didn't have the heart to tell him."

My throat closed.

"He asked me what happens to a person after the funeral. I said she goes to a quiet place." Her voice shook. "I know you think I'm the enemy, Elisa. I'm not. I love that little boy."

"I know you do."

I did know.

That was the strange part, the thing I couldn't make fit.

She did love him, and she had still put a list of my belongings in his mouth.

A waiter set down two glasses of water and left.

"I want to make this easy," Vittoria said. She opened her purse and took out a folder with yellow tabs. "A settlement, separate from the divorce. Two hundred thousand dollars. An apartment of your choice for two years. And visits with Dario every Saturday for two hours, at my house, with no one in the room."
