Chapter 15: Reopened

The assistant U.S. attorney drove up himself on Monday.

He came down the lane in a rented SUV, in his fleece vest and a pair of brand-new boots that still had the tag on the heel.

He stopped in front of the black shell of the paint shed and stood there for a while.

Then he climbed the stairs to the loft and sat at the hatch-cover table without being asked.

The marshal sat beside him.

Sandro stood by the stove with his arms crossed.

"The nephew talked for nine hours," the attorney said. "Some of it was about the fire. His uncle told him to burn the boat. Not the man. The boat."

"Generous," Sandro said.

"Some of it was about you." He looked up at Sandro. "He says when he turned eighteen, his uncle took him out on the water for his birthday and showed him where the union man went in."

The stove ticked.

"Renato told him he held the light," the attorney said. "That night. For his father."

I put my coffee down.

Sandro didn't move.

"Ten years ago, you told an FBI agent there were two men with the old man," the attorney said. "You never saw their faces. But you said one of them held a flashlight, and the hand on it had a ring."

"A gold ring," Sandro said. His voice had gone very quiet. "Square. Heavy. On the right hand. I could see the light shine off it."

"That's not enough. A ring is a ring."

"It's not," I said.

They all looked at me.

"It's a signet ring. Gold, with R.V. cut into the face. His father gave it to him at his confirmation, when he was fourteen." I held up my right hand. "He wears it here. He's never once taken it off. Not to shower. Not to sleep. I know, because I slept next to it for ten years."

The attorney wrote that down.

"There's a photo of him wearing it at his confirmation," I said. "His mother kept it in a silver frame on the piano. It's in the house."
