Chapter 14: The Chair at Breakfast

I read my father's last page four times before the sun came up.

Then I turned the ledger over and found the second signature.

Under Aldo's name, in a smaller hand, were two witnesses.

The first was the chair of the Commission.

The second was a name I had never seen, and beside it Aldo had written: "Newark notary."

I sat very still.

The old man in the brown coat had come to the table to swear that he recognized my eyes.

He had never said he had once signed my father's book.

I called Fausto.

"The chair eats breakfast at a diner on Staten Island every Sunday," he said. "He has done it for thirty years, and he sits with his back to the wall."

"Is he alone?"

"Never. Four of his men, and half the neighborhood."

"Good," I said. "I want them all to hear."

The diner had red booths and a flag over the register.

The chair sat at the corner table with his eggs, and his four men sat around him.

Two of them stood when I came through the door.

"Mrs. Landolfi," the chair said, without looking up. "You are not supposed to approach me before the sitting."

"I'm not Mrs. Landolfi today," I said. "I'm Mara Bellandi."

The diner went quiet.

A waitress stopped with the coffeepot in her hand.

I put the green ledger on his table, open to the last page.

"Read it," I said.

He read it.

He took his time, and he read the witnesses' names last.

When he got to his own, his fork went down.

"I signed this," he said.

"You signed it eight years ago, in my father's office, four days before he died."
