Chapter 12: Late

Antonia's POV

I typed the message in the back seat with my phone held low against my knee.

Give me three days. I'm not choosing him. Don't come.

I sent it, deleted the thread, and put the phone face down on my leg.

Carmine's driver pulled away from the curb.

In the side mirror I saw Vincent standing in the street where I'd left him, not moving.

I did not look twice.

My uncle sat beside me with his hand over mine.

"You did right, kid," he said. "I'm proud of you."

I let him hold my hand all the way across the bridge.

I let him lead me up the front steps of the house in Bay Ridge.

I let him take my coat in the hall.

I let him sit me on the couch in the den where I'd lain with a blanket on my knees five days ago.

The jar from Sunday was in my bag.

I put it on the coffee table.

"I'm going to tell you something," I said, "and I haven't told anyone else."

"Anything."

"I'm late."

I had never lied to him in my life.

It was surprisingly easy.

Carmine's face went through three different things, and the last one was joy.

"How late?"

"Nine days. I didn't want to say.

"After the pills, I thought my body was all wrecked. I thought I'd never get this."

I pressed my hand to my mouth and my eyes filled, and I did not have to try hard.
