Chapter 15: Not Handed to Me

My uncle's driver parked at the curb of the brick house at four o'clock on Thursday and turned off the engine.

"Take your time, Mrs. Strozzi," he said. "I've got a thermos."

I sat a moment with my hand on the door.

Yesterday my uncle had paid a doctor to keep me calm.

So I would be calm, and I would let the man in the front seat see it.

I got out without looking back at him.

The front door opened before I reached it.

Vincent stood in the hall in shirtsleeves, and behind him the whole house smelled of garlic.

"Nonna's cooking," he said. "She says you'll eat."

"I know."

"She also says if I touch you she'll hit me with the pan."

"Good."

I walked past him into the kitchen.

The long table at the back had been cleared of everything but a stack of green ledger books, three rings of keys, and a folded paper under a coffee cup.

Nonna stood at the stove with her back to us, stirring.

She had turned the radio on, an old station with an accordion in it.

"What is this?" I said.

"The books," Vincent said. "The restaurants, the trucking, the club. Every count for four years."

He picked up the keys, one ring at a time.

"The house. The safe in the back room. The cars, the warehouse on the pier."

"Why?"

"They're yours."

I looked at the paper under the cup.

"That's a letter to the Table," he said. "It says I'm putting the Strozzi name and everything under it in your hands, as of Friday. My signature's on it."

"Vincent."

"The men will take it from me. I've told Paolo."

"You told Paolo before you told me?"

"He had to know to carry it. I told him this morning. He cried."
