Chapter 22: The Count

Three weeks later, on a Friday in December, the Strozzi council room smelled of coffee and wet wool.

Snow had come in off the water that morning, and the capos stamped it off their shoes on the way in.

The gold-tooth capo's chair was gone.

His trucks, his cousin's hauling company and the building on Fourth Avenue had gone to Strozzi in the Table's ruling.

He had left New York with one suitcase.

Nobody mentioned him, and nobody sat where he had sat.

I took my chair at Vincent's right.

Serena had moved to the end of the table again, and had refused to give up her ledgers or her cardigan.

She was at fifteen weeks now, with a round little curve she liked to show to Nonna.

Paolo stood by the wall.

He had not sat at the table since the Table's judgment.

"Before the count," Vincent said, "I have something for the room."

He stood.

He took a folded sheet from his jacket and laid it in front of me.

"The Table's ruling on my own matter came down Wednesday," he said. "Censure, for a year. No vote at the Table. No seat at the council except by invitation."

The capos looked at one another.

"That's a hard sentence," one of them said. "Others in this house knew."

"I put it in the record that I did it alone," Vincent said. "I told the Table so, in front of you."
