Chapter 6: Nonna's Kitchen

Nonna's kitchen was at the back of the house, with a long scrubbed table and a window over the water.

She put me in a chair and set a bowl of escarole soup in front of me.

Then she stood over me until I picked up the spoon.

"Eat," she said. "You're too thin."

"I'm not hungry."

"I didn't ask."

I ate.

The soup was bitter and hot.

It was the same soup she had made every Sunday of my first winter in this house, when she told me I held a spoon wrong.

I had loved her from the first month.

Now I put the spoon down.

"You knew," I said.

"Yes."

She sat across from me, and she didn't look away or make excuses.

"Two years ago he came to this table with a bottle in his hand," she said. "I told him he was a fool and a coward, and that he would lose you for it."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

"Because he is my grandson." She folded her hands. "And because he gave me a reason, and the reason was not stupid."

"What reason?"

"That's his to say."

"He said I could ask him anything."

"Then ask him." Her black eyes didn't move. "If I say it, it's me doing a thing to you behind your back. I've watched what that does."

I waited.

She didn't give.

"You're a hard woman," I said.

"I'm a seventy-nine-year-old woman with a bad hip and no patience. Now eat the bread."

I tore the bread in half and laughed.

It came out wet, and Nonna pretended she hadn't heard.
