Chapter 15: The Empty Crib

Cosima's POV

The boathouse was empty by the time we got there.

The back bedroom still had a crib in it, with a dent in the mattress and a yellow blanket folded square at the foot.

I picked the blanket up and pressed it to my face.

It smelled of milk and of a day-old baby.

Stefano's men searched every room and found two bottles in the sink and tire tracks that ended at the county road.

Nobody knew which way the cars had turned.

I held the blanket the whole drive home.

I did not cry in the car, or in the hall, or when his aunt took my coat.

I climbed the stairs to his room and shut the door behind both of us.

"Cosima," Stefano said.

"Lock it."

He turned the key.

I dropped the blanket on the chair and put my back against the door.

"I don't want to be careful," I said. "I don't want you to ask how I am."

"What do you want?"

"I want you to fuck me until I can't think."

His breath went out of him.

He crossed the room in three steps and had me against the door, his mouth on mine, one hand fisted in my hair.

I bit his lip, and he groaned.

I tore his shirt open and buttons hit the floor.

His hands pushed up my dress, and he found me bare under it and went still.

"No underwear," he said.

"I didn't have time."

"Fuck."

He lifted me by the thighs, and my legs went around his waist.

He carried me to the bed and dropped me on my back, and he dragged the dress up over my head.

I lay there naked while he looked at me.

"Take your pants off."

He did, fast, and his cock sprang free, thick and hard and already wet at the tip.

I sat up and took it in my hand.

He hissed.

I put my mouth around him and sucked him slowly down, until he hit the back of my throat.

"Christ, Cosima."

I hummed around him, and his hand tightened in my hair.
