Chapter 23: Her Daughter in My Arms
The room upstairs smelled of warm milk and lavender soap.
The oldest Don's wife sat in a low chair by the window with the yellow blanket in her lap.
She stood when I came in.
She did not say anything.
She walked across the carpet and put my daughter into my arms.
I took her.
I sat down on the edge of the bed because my legs would not hold me, and I looked at her face.
She was awake.
She had my mother's chin and my mother's frown, and she frowned at me now.
"There you are," I said.
She yawned.
It was the smallest, most outrageous yawn I had ever seen.
I laughed, and then I was crying, and the old woman took a handkerchief out of her sleeve and pressed it into my hand.
"You were right to hit him," she said.
"I hit him once."
"You should have hit him more."
Behind her in the doorway, the oldest Don stood with his hat in his hand.
He cleared his throat.
"Mrs. Lucarelli. A formality."
"Go on."
"The Commission has ruled on the child. Cosima Lucarelli is the mother. She has sole custody. The question will not be reopened by any family."
"Thank you."
"The doctor will lose his license," he said. "He goes under Ravello protection, and he will testify to anyone who asks. Fabiola Neri has left the city."
"Where?"
"On a bus."
I nodded.
I did not feel anything about it, and I let that be true.
Stefano came in last.
He stood against the wall by the door with his hands in his pockets, and he did not step closer.
He had a bandage on his jaw where a shard of plaster had cut him.
"Come here," I said.
