Chapter 8: Outside Is a Big Place

Stefano's POV

I had promised to wait outside, and I kept my word until she walked into the shop.

Then I got out of the car and stood on the pavement across from the baby shop with my hands in my pockets.

Through the window I watched her take the pearls off Fabiola's neck.

She did it without raising her voice.

She did it in front of four wives, six armed men and a woman who would have liked to see her dead.

When it was over, her back was straight.

I had known Rocco Lucarelli's wife by sight for nine years.

I had stood across rooms from her at weddings and funerals.

I had watched her pour his coffee and straighten his tie.

I had never once heard her say a sentence that was only her own.

Now she came out through the shop door with the pearls wrapped around her fist.

She looked up and down the street and saw me.

"You said you'd wait outside," Cosima said.

"This is outside."

"You're across the road."

"Outside is a big place."

The corner of her mouth went up.

It was the first time I'd seen it do that on its own.

Behind her, Ugo came out of the shop with three men.

They fanned across the pavement and stopped when they saw me.

"Mr. Ravello," Ugo said. "The Don's wife is going home."

"She's going where she wants," I said.

I walked across the road, and I did not hurry.

Ugo had a gun under his jacket.

I had two men in the car behind me and a sniper on the roof of the florist's next door.

Ugo knew about the florist.

His eyes went to the roof, and then to Cosima's bandaged arm.
