Chapter 19: The Vote
The council met on Thursday night in the back room of a union hall on Ashland, at a table with seven chairs.
Five bosses sat in five of them.
Agnese sat in the sixth, in black, with her husband's old cane across her knees.
The seventh was Leandro's, and he sat in it with his hands folded.
Teo's chair was empty, because he stood behind mine.
Rina set four black binders on the table and went back to the door, where she crossed her arms and looked at the guards.
"A woman at the council," said the oldest boss, from Cicero, with an old man's wheeze. "Whose idea is this?"
"Mine," Agnese said. "She is my son's wife and she keeps his books. She will speak, or I leave and take my vote with me."
"Leandro?"
"Let her speak," Leandro said pleasantly. "It's a family matter, and my wife is upset."
I opened the first binder.
My hands were steady, because they always were with numbers.
"Five years ago this table agreed that the restaurants' cash is split seven ways," I said. "Every family here is paid out of one account, and I have kept the record of it."
"We know the account," said the boss from Calumet City. "We are paid from it."
"Four years ago, on the first of the month, a payment of fifteen thousand dollars began leaving that account. It went to a charity called St. Anne's Guild."
I slid a page to him.
"It's forty-eight payments. Seven hundred and twenty thousand dollars of this table's money."
