Chapter 19: The Scare

The emergency room smelled of floor cleaner and burnt coffee.

Lena lay on a narrow bed behind a curtain with her knees up and one hand locked in Damian's.

He had not let go since the ambulance.

His other hand was clenched in his lap, and the knuckles were white.

"I'm sorry," he said for the fourth time.

"Stop saying that."

"I should have told you about Phoebe earlier."

"You'd have told me, and I'd have found a way to blame you for it." Her voice came out thin. "Is the baby moving?"

"It's too early. You said so."

"I know what I said."

The curtain slid back.

The doctor was a small woman with her glasses pushed into her hair and a cart with a screen on it.

"Mrs. Karras? I'm going to do an ultrasound. You've had a bleed, and we need to see where it's coming from."

Lena nodded, and could not speak.

The gel was cold.

The doctor moved the wand over her stomach, frowning at the screen.

Damian had stopped breathing.

Lena could feel it in his hand.

Then the room filled with a fast, small, steady beat.

"There," the doctor said.

On the screen, a shape the size of a lima bean flickered and pulsed.

"That is a heartbeat of a hundred and sixty," the doctor said. "It's strong. The bleed is behind the placenta, a small one. It happens, especially under stress."

"Will it stop?"

"Most of them do. Bed rest for a week, nothing strenuous, nothing upsetting.

"No stairs. No arguments. I mean that, Mr. Karras."

Damian let out a laugh that cracked in the middle.

He put his forehead against the back of Lena's hand.

His shoulders were shaking.

She stroked the hair above his ear with her free fingers and looked at the little flickering bean.
